The Red River feeds Lake Texoma from the west, the Washita River from the north, and multiple tributaries, including Big Mineral Creek, Buncombe Creek, and Rock Creek. The lake is unique for its natural saltwater content, making it the only lake in Texas with a self-sustaining striped bass population.

Water levels fluctuate throughout the year, with a normal elevation ranging between 615 and 619 feet. The flood control pool extends up to 645 feet, and the lake has overflowed its spillway five times in recorded history, most recently in 2015.

Lake Texoma spans multiple counties and is surrounded by notable cities such as Denison, Sherman, and Gainesville in Texas and Durant in Oklahoma. Smaller towns like Madill, Kingston, Pottsboro, and Gordonville are also closely connected to the lake, offering local businesses and services catering to residents and tourists.

The lake features several small islands, including West Island, Wood Island, Treasure Island, and Hog Island, accessible only by watercraft.

Lake Texoma boasts two state parks:
